kontiki

In 2003 kontiki was set up for genre comprehensive, experimental design with an open end. The name goes back to Thor Heyerdahl who with his raft “kontiki” sailed from the west coast of America to Polynesia in the late 1940ies.  Karin Maislinger, the founder of kontiki came across a picture of the above mentioned raft, including its wildly bearded crew. Right away she was impressed by the project, the men’s courage and fearlessness: That is why she decided to use the name “kontiki” for her own personal adventure.Since then the label is coming up with new designs several times a year. The designs are getting released within the constantly changing bag-collection “the aquatic series” – made of recycled bicycle tubes.
